Life Insurance

When you apply for Life Insurance, gastric bypass surgery that has taken place in the last 5 years will need to be disclosed in your application. The terms that you are offered on your cover will depend upon the time since the operation, your current weight and it is possible that the insurer may want to know your pre-surgery weight too.

Life Insurance after gastric bypass surgery that has taken place within the last few years may receive a small premium loading if your current weight is now good. If you weight is still quite high, your surgery was performed recently or there were any complications from the surgery you may find that your policy premiums are increased further.

Critical Illness Cover

Critical Illness Cover for people who have had a gastric bypass will typically be treated in the same manner as Life Insurance. Gastric bypass Critical Illness Cover applications will probably be subject to small premium loadings if your weight has now reduced and there are no complications from your previous weight or the surgery. The greater the time it has been since your surgery, the lower your premium loading is likely to be.

Income Protection

Income Protection for people who have had a gastric bypass will require a report from your GP surgery. This is so that the insurer can get a clear picture of your health before they offer cover, in order for them to assess the likelihood of you taking extended periods of time off work due to your health. As with the other policy types discussed above, provided that your weight has reduced and there are no lasting complications, an Income Protection policy will probably be available with a small premium loading.

Summary definition

Gastric bypass surgery is generally made available to individuals who are classed as having life threatening obesity, typically over a BMI of 40. Other health factors such as type 2 diabetes can result in the surgery being offered to those with a BMI of 35 or above. Gastric bypass surgery can effectively help an individual to lose weight quickly, but it should always be treated as a last resort.
