Life Insurance

Life Insurance when you have high cholesterol can be available at standard rates if the condition is well controlled. High cholesterol Life Insurance applications can often be processed immediately online provided that you are aware of your latest readings and there has been no recent change to your medication. Cholesterol readings up to 6 should be able to secure standard terms on their policy premiums, above 6 it is likely that your policy premiums could be increased.

If you take more than two medications to control the condition then there is a chance that some insurance companies may increase your premiums slightly. Life Insurance with high cholesterol applications are viewed more favourably the older that you are. If you are young and have high cholesterol or you also have a high BMI then some providers may ask to write to your GP or request a medical before cover is offered.

Critical Illness Cover

Critical Illness when you have high cholesterol is dealt with similarly to Life Insurance applications, if your condition is well controlled then you will probably be eligible for standard rates on your policy. High cholesterol critical illness insurance applications will usually need the details of your latest reading, when you were diagnosed and if you have had any complications.

As with Life Insurance, your insurer may wish for further information from your GP if you are young or have other complications. In some circumstances this can result in a higher premium, due to factors such as age and combinations of medication.

Income Protection

Following the same edict as above, Income Protection when you have high cholesterol can often be available at standard terms if your condition is well controlled.

Income Protection for those with high cholesterol can result in the policy being rated due to combinations of medication, family history and your age. Due to the high number of claims on Income Protection, underwriting of high cholesterol will be stricter than say Life Insurance. You will likely be asked to provide details of recent readings and the number of medications you take.

If you cholesterol is very high and Income Protection is not available, you could look at Accident, Sickness and Unemployment cover that will pay a monthly income replacement for between 12 and 24 months. Accident, Sickness and Unemployment cover policies are not medically underwritten and so policy premiums are not increased based upon health factors. However you should be aware that any claim that is related to your high cholesterol, or any other existing condition, will not be paid by the policy.

Summary definition

Our bodies produce both good (high-density lipoprotein, HDL) and bad cholesterol (low-density lipoprotein, LDL). High cholesterol occurs when there is an overabundance of low-density lipoproteins (atheroma/fatty material), that build up on the artery walls restricting regular blood flow and the livers ability to process and remove excess cholesterol. High cholesterol can be caused by other medical conditions but is often the result of age or diet, with lifestyle changes being a primary factor in reducing its impact upon a persons health.
