Life Insurance

When you apply for Life Insurance a rope access technician will need to inform the insurer of the heights that they regularly work at. For those who work under 40 feet Life Insurance will generally be available at standard terms provided that there are no other disclosures on your application. If you regularly work above 40 feet there are some insurers who will consider your application at standard terms as they understand that there are significant safety precautions in place when performing your job role. Some insurers will increase your policy premiums based upon your occupation so it is important that you place the application with the correct insurer for your circumstances.

If you are an offshore worker the insurer will also want to know how long you are out of the country and the countries that you travel to.

Critical Illness Cover

Critical Illness Cover for rope access technicians will be assessed similarly to Life Insurance. The insurer will be interested in the regular heights that you work at and if you are an onshore or offshore worker. Some insurers will increase your policy premiums if you work regularly above 40 feet. It is important that you place your application with a specific insurer who will consider your application at standard terms. You may find that a certain aspect of the policy called Total Permanent Disability (TPD) is excluded from the policy claims set due to your occupation. Whilst this is a valuable part of Critical Illness Cover it is often difficult to qualify for a claim for TPD and you should not let the removal of this from the policy deter you from proceeding with your application.

Income Protection

When you apply for an Income Protection policy as a rope access technician you should aim to secure a policy with an 'own occupation' definition of cover; this means that at the point of claim you will be assessed on your ability to perform your job as a rope access technician. Other policy definitions, suited occupation or any occupation, are much more difficult to claim on as your claim is assessed on your ability to perform a like job or any job at all. We would always recommend that you purchase an own occupation definition wherever possible provided that the policy is affordable to you.

Income Protection for rope access technicians can be written with a deferment period of 1 day, 1 week, 4 weeks, 8 weeks, 13 weeks, 26 weeks or 52 weeks. This is the amount of time that you will need to wait to receive your benefit payout following your inability to work. When you are choosing your deferment period you should consider any employment benefits, savings and budget that you have for the Income Protection policy. Our financial advisers regularly help clients to choose the deferment period that is most appropriate to their needs and we are happy to discuss the benefits of different options with you.
